Troubling Record Broken Days Into Hurricane Season

    Well, that didn't take long.

The official start of hurricane season in Atlantic Ocean only began on June 1st and it only took three days to set a new record with three storms powerful enough to get a name having already formed. To put things into context, it usually takes until August 13 for the third Atlantic storm large enough for a name to form.

Weather forecasters and climatologists have warned that 2020 will be a busy hurricane season and they certainly seem to be right so far. A busy hurricane season is defined as 6-10 hurricanes with 3-6 of those becoming a Category 3 hurricane or higher.

As if that weren't worrying enough, this hurricane season will be competing, for lack of a better word, with the ongoing health crisis that has strained the health services of numerous cities and states. So a major hurricane making a direct hit on one or more American cities has the potential to push some health systems to their breaking point.

To be clear, there is no guarantee that a major hurricane will hit American shores this year, but this early record certainly gives me a reason to be concerned.

2020 is shaping up to be one of the most eye-opening and dramatic and eventful years in decades. If it hasn't already achieved that rank, just halfway through. Both in the US and worldwide. Not only are we waking up to what a communicable disease can really do to the world, but couple that with civil unrest and then record breaking natural disasters.. 2020 could be the year that starts real change in dialog and action for climate change too. We all seem to be in the mood to take action, so maybe if it gets as bad as predicted, we will be extra motivated to change the way we go about life in general, as so many things have challenged our past modes of operation.

True. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the heaviness of this year, in climate change, society and public health. Things will never be the same again, but I think many good things can come from it. Changes need to be made, and perhaps this is just the year to tip the scales in that favor.
